As a lifelong bad sleeper, I think what people mean when they say that they “love sleeping” is that they feel fantastic *after* a good night’s sleep. For me, that feeling is elusive but when it happens I treasure it. So I would interpret it as “I love having slept well.”

Why hasn’t evolution fixed the “leaky” energy production process, thus negating the fundamental need for sleep? I would think that would unlock a significant survival advantage.

Whenever I hear about a finding that supposedly explains why we sleep, I've thought about Geoffrey West's research on the scaling relationship between an animal's sleeping time with respect to their body mass, and how the relationship suggested that sleep is related to the body's metabolism. The mitochondria theory fits perfectly, and indeed, I see that the paper cites West's papers. Interesting stuff.
